Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and anything you put onto it has the potential to affect it – both it’s appearance and health. So why bother with makeup and beauty products full of skin irritants and toxic chemicals when there are amazing clean and green brands emerging that can transform your beauty routine? Below are some of my favourite natural beauty brands that are changing the beauty industry and creating truly amazing products.
This brand is proving that natural can also be sexy, modern and chic. Not only are the cosmetics created to provide incredible coverage and pigmentation but they also deliver key nutrients and botanical extracts that work as skincare to address particular skin concerns such as loss of elasticity, hyperpigmentation, acne and redness/inflammation. Basically, Fitglow is offering skincare disguised as cosmetics.
Some of my favourite products: Conceal+, Lip Colour Serum (if you ask me for a pen there is a good chance I will pull at least 3 tubes of this out of my purse), and Good Lash+ 3-in-1 Mascara.
(disclosure: I work with Fitglow Beauty to help educate their stockists about ingredients and provide feedback on formulations)
If you are looking for a cleaner dupe for your favourite lipstick, then look no further than Bite Beauty. Not only are their lip products natural but they come in such a wide range of colours and finishes that you won’t have any trouble replacing some old favourites. I also love that their formulations contain a number of different antioxidants to protect the lips from oxidative damage.
Some of my favourite products: Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Fig and Agave Lip Mask (Candy Cane, Lavender and Maple can all be found around my house).
This brand has so much to offer and such a wide range of products. Their makeup offerings are coloured with fruit, vegetable, tea and other plant pigments, which also offer skin beneficial nutrients and antioxidants.
Some of my favourite products: Bamboo Blur Powder and BB Cream
The blushes from this brand are just to die for. Their highly pigmented formula gives the perfect flush. Their entire line of products offers great quality, free of toxic ingredients at a reasonable price point.
Some of my favourite products: Blush in Ooh La La and Corrector in Blush Away
If you are acne-prone then Alima Pure is a great line of makeup products to consider. They offer high-performance, luxurious products in a diverse range of shades made from natural ingredients. Not only that but the company has been carbon neutral for 10 years by offsetting 100% of their carbon emissions.
Some of my favourite products: Satin Matte Foundation, Cream Concealer and Highlighter.
Antonym is another brand proving natural and luxury can coexist. Not only is their outer packaging beautiful but it is also sustainably produced. All their products are Leaping Bunny certified meaning they are 100% cruelty free.
Some of my favourite products: Baked Highlighting Blush and Baked Foundation.
Another gorgeous, luxurious natural brand – Ilia is performance-driven, safe and beautiful. The creators have really thought about ever aspect of the product from the ingredients to the packaging to ensure everything is as beautiful and sustainable as possible.
Some of my favourite products: Lip Conditioner, Pure Eyeliner in Havana Affair and My Generation, and Radiant Translucent Powder SPF 20
This Canadian brand offers vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free products in sustainable packaging. I particularly like that they offer magnetic palettes that you can fill with the products you like (these palettes are also great for housing a number of other brands that come with refillable options).
Some of my favourite products: Bamboo Palettes and Pressed Eye Colours
au Naturale is vowing to start a clean beauty revolution and is leading the charge demanding stricter regulation of cosmetic products in the United States. Not only are they creating amazing products but they stand for change in the industry.
Some of my favourite products: Eternity Lipstick and Color Theory Crème Correctors
I love the minimalism and beauty of this brand. It is definitely a luxury natural brand but worth the splurge. The metal compacts are refillable and protect your product (this is great when traveling). Kjaer Weis ensures that not only are all their ingredients Certified Natural or Certified Organic, but that they always reach the standards of luxury beauty.
Some of my favourite products: Cream Foundation and Cream Blush in Happy and Lovely.
What about Dr. Hauschka? I heard they are very clean.
They are clean. There are a number of great brands I didn’t mention here. These are my personal favourites. Also I haven’t used a number of the Dr. Hauschka products due to the presence of alcohol and wheat/gluten in their products.
Hi Dr. Newell,
I just discovered your wonderful website! Thank you for these suggestions. I have a number of friends who are big on Arbonne. What is your opinion on their products? Are they as natural as they claim?
Hi,
Naturopathic Doctors are discouraged from being affiliated with multilevel marketing companies so I don’t have a ton of experience with Arbonne. However, what I have found with these companies is that quite often the products are expensive for the quality that they offer and that there are better options available that can be recommended by qualified individuals.
Do you have any input on Lifance Skin Care products ? And I wondered how important certified organic ingredients are in skin care products? Thanks!
Hi Lyndsay,
I am not familiar with this product line. When it comes to skincare products, organic is nice but doesn’t necessarily lead to better results as it is a farming and cultivation practice. However, ethically and for environmental reasons it may be something that is important to an individual.
